Keep the Gospel Clear
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 KJV
A message can become unclear when too many useful ideas are placed in the center. Being kind, attending church, reading the Bible, and helping others all matter, but none of them is the saving work Paul describes here.
The gospel announces what Jesus Christ has done. He died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. These are events in history, accomplished by the Son of God, with eternal significance for sinners who need reconciliation with God.
Salvation is received through faith in Christ. We cannot add good behavior as a payment that makes His work sufficient. Religious ceremonies cannot do what only the Saviour can do. Make sure your own confidence rests in Him rather than in familiarity with Christian activities.
When you explain the gospel, keep its center plain. Speak about sin honestly, Christ accurately, and grace clearly. You can answer further questions patiently without losing the main message in a collection of side issues. The truth is simple enough to state plainly and deep enough to shape the rest of your life. Keep returning to the Saviour whose finished work gives the message its saving power.
Keep the passage in context
Paul reminds the Corinthians of the gospel he preached, centering it on Christ's death for sins, burial, and resurrection according to the Scriptures.
