Let the Light Point beyond You

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 5:16 KJV

Doing something helpful can quickly become an opportunity to manage your image. You may begin by caring about a need and end by checking who noticed. The action remains visible, but the purpose has shifted.

Jesus does not tell His followers to hide every good deed. He tells them where the honor should go. Christian conduct should make God's goodness visible rather than make the believer seem important.

Serve thoughtfully and speak honestly about the reason for your hope. You do not need to turn every kind action into a public announcement. When thanks comes, receive it graciously without pretending the effort cost nothing or using it to claim superiority.

Remember that good works cannot save you or anyone watching you. The gospel concerns what Christ has done for sinners. Your conduct should agree with that message and make it easier to hear clearly. A dependable attitude, a fair decision, and patient kindness can all bear witness in ordinary places. Let the light illuminate something better than your own reputation, and trust the Lord with how widely the action is seen.

Keep the passage in context

Jesus teaches His disciples that their good works should lead others to glorify the Father. Visible obedience has a purpose beyond building personal admiration.
