The Good Deed without an Audience
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 6:1 KJV
There are helpful things you can do that will never become a story someone tells about you. A room can be straightened, a task completed, or a quiet need met without attaching your name to the result.
Those opportunities reveal something about the heart. If an action seems worthless unless someone sees it, praise may have become more important than the person you intended to help. Jesus directs our attention toward the Father who sees accurately.
Choose one responsibility today and carry it out without arranging recognition. Do it well because it is right. If someone notices, be pleasant and truthful. If no one notices, the value of the obedience has not disappeared.
We should not turn hidden service into another form of pride. The purpose is not to feel superior to people who receive public thanks. It is to learn freedom from needing an audience. God's grace has already given believers an identity in Christ. We can serve from gratitude instead of asking every good action to prove that we matter. Quiet faithfulness has room to become joyful when approval no longer has to be collected at the end.
Keep the passage in context
Jesus warns against performing acts of righteousness for the purpose of being seen and praised. The issue is the motive behind the action, not whether anyone happens to notice it.
