The Friend Who Helps You Stay Awake

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Hebrews 3:13 KJV

A good friend does more than make you feel comfortable. Sometimes friendship means noticing that your attitude has changed and speaking kindly before a small compromise becomes an established habit.

Sin can make its own excuses sound reasonable. A cruel joke becomes harmless fun. A lie becomes necessary protection. A habit you once resisted starts to feel normal. Hebrews reminds us that we need truthful encouragement from other believers while our hearts are still willing to listen.

Receive correction without requiring the person to say everything perfectly. You can consider a true concern even when the conversation feels awkward. Compare the concern with Scripture, admit what is right, and seek help where you need it.

Be that kind of friend as well. Speak privately, avoid exaggeration, and offer practical support instead of enjoying the role of correcting someone. You are not responsible to control another person's heart. You can help point a friend toward Christ with patience and honesty. A faithful conversation may never look impressive to anyone else, yet it can interrupt a harmful direction before the consequences grow.

Keep the passage in context

Believers are urged to exhort one another because sin deceives and hardens the heart. Encouragement includes a loving appeal to remain responsive to God's truth.
