When the Word Reaches the Real Issue

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12 KJV

It is possible to give the correct explanation while hiding the real reason behind a choice. You may say that you are too busy to help when the truth is resentment. You may describe gossip as concern while enjoying the attention it brings.

Scripture reaches places that a polished explanation cannot protect. God's Word does not depend upon our willingness to describe ourselves accurately. The Lord knows what is happening beneath the surface, and His truth helps us recognize it.

Read with a readiness to be corrected. A passage is not useful only when it explains another person's failure. Let it speak to your own motives, attitudes, and actions. Conviction is an opportunity to turn toward the Lord, not a reason to stop reading.

You do not have to repair your heart before approaching Christ. Come honestly, confess the sin He exposes, and take the next obedient step. Ask a trustworthy adult for help with patterns you cannot seem to escape. The Word's searching work is serious, but the Saviour who knows us completely is also the One who provides the grace we need.

Keep the passage in context

God's Word penetrates beyond outward appearance and exposes the thoughts and intentions of the heart. The passage calls its hearers to take God's searching truth seriously.
