The Reply You Have Not Sent

A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

Proverbs 15:1 KJV

A message can be typed in ten angry seconds and remembered for years. Before sending the reply, read it as the person who will receive it. Notice whether you are explaining a problem or trying to make someone feel small.

The soft answer in Proverbs is not cowardice. It takes strength to speak plainly without borrowing cruelty from the person who upset you. You can disagree, set a boundary, or report mistreatment while refusing to mock.

Delete the sentence whose only purpose is injury. Replace vague accusations with what actually happened. If you need time, say so and return when you can speak responsibly. You are not in charge of another person's reaction. You are responsible before God for the words you choose.

Keep the passage in context

Proverbs contrasts wise and foolish speech. A gentle answer can quiet an argument, while hurtful words feed anger. This is wise instruction for our response, not a guarantee that another person will behave peacefully.
