Truth Where No One Can Applaud It

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

Psalm 51:6 KJV

An apology can sound right while leaving the heart unchanged. You may know the sentence that ends the conversation without being willing to admit what made the action wrong. God looks deeper than the successful use of the expected words.

David understood that truth was needed within. His sin could not be repaired by appearing respectable again. He needed the Lord's cleansing and a real change in the direction of his heart.

When you confess wrongdoing, resist the urge to manage how impressive your confession sounds. Tell the truth plainly. Acknowledge the motive you can honestly identify, and remain willing to learn about what you have not yet recognized.

No one else can manufacture inward honesty for you. A parent can set a boundary and a teacher can impose a consequence, but a truthful response requires your own willingness before God. Ask for wise help and receive correction. Christ's grace is sufficient for real sinners, so there is no benefit in presenting Him with a carefully improved version of the problem. Bring the actual need into the light and begin walking honestly in the next choice.

Keep the passage in context

In David's confession after grievous sin, he recognizes God's desire for truth in the inward parts. Genuine repentance reaches beyond repairing a public image.
