The Good That Looks Like Christ

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Romans 8:29 KJV

We often define a good day by comfort and convenience. The schedule worked, the expense was manageable, and no difficult conversation was required. Those are pleasant gifts, but they do not contain the whole meaning of God's good purpose.

Romans directs attention toward becoming like Christ. The Lord is at work in His people at a depth that a smooth week cannot fully measure. Patience, truthfulness, humility, and love matter to Him.

Do not use that truth to explain every hardship as a lesson you can identify for your spouse. Suffering deserves compassion, and we do not know all the reasons behind it. We can, however, seek a faithful response within the circumstances we actually face.

Encourage one another toward Christlike conduct in the next choice. Speak truth without cruelty, serve without pride, and receive correction without despair. The Lord's purpose reaches beyond making life convenient. A marriage can experience meaningful growth even in a season neither person would have chosen. Let the image of Christ give you a fuller standard for recognizing good than the simple question of whether everything went according to plan.

Keep the passage in context
