Leave Growth in the Lord's Hands

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

1 Corinthians 3:6 KJV

You can encourage your spouse, speak truth, and live faithfully. You cannot produce spiritual growth by applying enough pressure. The heart belongs before God in a way no human relationship can replace.

Paul's words concern ministry in the church, and the principle keeps service humble. Planting and watering matter, yet the increase is God's work. We should serve faithfully without claiming control over the result.

Within marriage, let encouragement remain kind and truthful. Avoid comparing your spouse's pace with someone else's public appearance. If a clear sin or serious concern needs attention, address it honestly and seek wise help. Patient love does not mean ignoring what is wrong.

Continue your own obedience to Christ. Pray, learn, serve, and speak when there is an appropriate opportunity. Do not turn every ordinary conversation into a campaign to improve the other person. The Lord can work through means and timing you cannot arrange. Faithfulness gives you real responsibilities, while trust allows you to leave the work you cannot do in the hands of the One who can.

Keep the passage in context

Paul distinguishes the work of planting and watering from the increase God gives. Ministers serve faithfully while spiritual life and growth depend upon God.
