Let the Home Hear the Truth Clearly
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
Genesis 18:19 KJV
Children and other household members learn from more than a formal lesson. They hear what we praise, what we excuse, and how we speak when something goes wrong. Instruction is always taking place in some form.
Let clear biblical teaching accompany a truthful example. Explain the gospel plainly, distinguish Scripture from personal preference, and admit your own failures when needed. A parent does not have to maintain an image of perfection in order to teach faithfully.
Husbands and wives should discuss the standards they intend to communicate. Consistency becomes difficult when a child receives two different accounts of the same responsibility. Work through disagreements respectfully and avoid recruiting children to support one side.
Abraham's setting is specific, and his covenant role is not a promise that every child will respond as parents desire. Faith must be personal. Our responsibility is faithful instruction and conduct, with dependence upon God for the heart. Let the home hear truth spoken clearly and see adults willing to obey it. A humble example can give the lesson a credibility that a louder lecture cannot supply.
Keep the passage in context
God speaks of Abraham teaching his household to keep the way of the LORD. The passage places family instruction within the larger purpose of God's covenant dealings with Abraham.
