Loved before We Had an Impressive Account

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8 KJV

We often want to be loved at our most presentable. We explain the failure, soften the weakness, and hope the better parts of the story receive more attention. God knew the whole truth when Christ died for sinners.

The cross does not minimize sin. It reveals both its seriousness and the depth of God's love. Jesus bore what we could not repair through an improved public image.

That truth gives a marriage room for honesty. We do not need to maintain a false appearance before the Lord, and truthful confession should have a proper place between spouses. Serious betrayal still requires responsible repair and time; love does not make consequences imaginary.

Let the gospel keep shame from driving everything into secrecy. Seek Christ's forgiveness and wise help where needed. Then respond to one another with the humility of people who have been loved while deeply undeserving. You can take sin seriously without treating a repentant person as beyond the reach of grace. The Saviour's love was never based upon an impressive account of our behavior, so there is hope for a truthful one.

Keep the passage in context

Paul points to Christ's death for sinners as the demonstration of God's love. His saving love precedes any claim that we made ourselves worthy of it.
