Trust the One Who Justifies

But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Romans 4:5 KJV
Some people are so accustomed to earning their place that grace sounds almost irresponsible. They work hard, meet expectations, and assume that God must operate by the same arrangement as an employer.
Paul makes the distinction plain. Justification concerns the ungodly person who believes, not a successful worker presenting enough merit. Jesus Christ has accomplished the saving work, and faith rests in Him.
Do not confuse this with permission to remain careless about conduct. The faith that receives Christ brings a person into a new relationship with Him. Obedience follows as fruit, while the foundation remains His righteousness rather than our wages.
A couple can help one another keep that foundation clear. Speak of the gospel accurately, especially when discussing spiritual growth or failure. Avoid turning a spouse's devotional routine into the measure of whether God is willing to save them. The Saviour is sufficient for the person who comes to Him in faith. Rest there, then encourage the good works that gratitude and the Spirit's work produce in a life already received by grace.
Keep the passage in context
Paul contrasts working for a wage with believing on God who justifies the ungodly. Righteousness is received through faith rather than earned by personal achievement.
