Receive Help without Apologizing for Being Human

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

Romans 12:5 KJV

Some couples are quick to help others and uncomfortable receiving help themselves. A meal, a ride, or a practical offer can feel like an admission that the household has failed to manage properly.

Scripture describes believers as belonging together. Different members serve in different ways, and seasons of need are part of ordinary life. Receiving appropriate help can allow another person to exercise the care the Lord has given them to offer.

Be clear about what would actually help and grateful for what is freely given. Respect reasonable boundaries on both sides. You do not have to accept an offer that carries manipulation or unsafe conditions.

Within trustworthy Christian fellowship, let care move in both directions. A season of illness, recovery, or unusual pressure may change the way your household participates for a while. That does not remove your value. Christ's people are not a collection of independent homes proving that they need nothing from one another. A marriage can become stronger when both spouses learn to receive wise assistance without treating human limitation as a source of shame.

Keep the passage in context

Paul describes believers as members of one body in Christ and members of one another. Christian life includes mutual dependence and varied service.
