Most of us can explain how we would like to be treated when we are tired. We want a little patience, a chance to finish our sentence, and some understanding about the work we have carried. Jesus directs that same care outward.
Marriage gives us daily opportunities to practice His command. Let your spouse know when plans change. Put away the thing that will become someone else's unnecessary job. Ask before committing both of you to an event. These ordinary courtesies communicate that the other person's time and strength matter.
This is not a trade in which we keep a running total until our kindness is repaid. We obey Christ because His word is right. At the same time, treating someone well includes speaking clearly about genuine needs. Resentful silence is a poor substitute for honest conversation. Offer the respect you would welcome, and ask for what needs attention in a way that allows the two of you to address it together.
Keep the passage in context
Jesus summarizes a duty toward others that agrees with the law and the prophets. The command calls for active love, not a bargain in which kindness is given only when it is returned.
