Obedience May Require a Quieter Response
Obedience May Require a Quieter Response: an original Matthew 1:18-21 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.
“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”
Matthew 1:18-21 KJV
Joseph faced information he did not yet understand. His initial concern included Mary's welfare, and he did not rush to make her a public example. Then God gave the explanation Joseph could never have discovered through ordinary suspicion or speculation.
Read the passage carefully
The virgin birth is a unique truth about the coming of Jesus Christ. We should not turn this passage into a general instruction to believe every extraordinary claim. We can learn from Joseph's restraint while receiving the angel's message as part of the inspired account. The child is the promised Saviour, and His mission concerns deliverance from sin rather than simply improving circumstances.
There are moments when incomplete information can produce a damaging public response. A message appears suspicious, a story reaches us secondhand, or another person's conduct is difficult to explain. Seek the facts through proper means before spreading a conclusion. Where immediate safety is involved, act responsibly to protect people. In ordinary disputes, restraint can prevent an accusation from becoming a harm that later clarification cannot fully repair.
Carry this truth into the day
Christ came to save sinners, and that grace should shape how His people handle the faults and uncertainties of others. We can take truth seriously without enjoying public humiliation. Joseph needed a word from God about an event unlike any other. We need the wisdom God has already given in Scripture about truthful speech, patience, justice, and mercy. Let those commands guide the next difficult conversation. A quiet response is not always the whole duty, but it may be the faithful beginning that leaves room for facts, protects dignity, and keeps our desire to be first from outrunning our responsibility to be right.
Why the setting matters
Joseph learns of Mary's pregnancy and considers how to act before an angel explains that the child is conceived of the Holy Ghost. He is told the child's name and saving mission.
