Scripture Review
The temptation does not disappear after Joseph’s first refusal. Potiphar’s wife speaks to him day by day, but he refuses to hearken, lie by her, or be with her. Joseph does not see how close he can stand to sin without falling. When she catches his garment, he leaves it and flees. The coat in Genesis 37 was stripped from him by violent brothers; this garment is surrendered by Joseph because obedience matters more than appearance.
Running can look weak to people who admire self-confidence, but Scripture calls me to flee certain sins. Joseph loses the garment and keeps his integrity. If I insist on saving both, I may lose the thing that matters. The way of escape in this scene is not comfortable. It leads straight toward a false accusation. Still, a costly escape is better than a comfortable fall.
Potiphar’s wife meant to wear down Joseph’s refusal through daily pressure and then seize the moment when no other man was in the house.
God meant to provide a real path of obedience. Joseph could leave the room even though fleeing would not protect him from every consequence.
What this asks of me
I should not negotiate with repeated temptation. Sometimes the faithful response is to leave the conversation, close the screen, change the routine, or step away from a place entirely. Escape may cost convenience, reputation, or opportunity. Holiness is worth more than the garment I leave behind.
